The manuscript explores the psycholinguistic processes responsible for cross-linguistic influence in translation. In two experimental studies with professional translators-in-training, we investigate the psycholinguistic foundations of shining-through effects in translated texts, i.e., cases where the grammatical structure of a source sentence leaves traces in the translated sentence. Experiment 1 reports the results from a translation task investigating the influence of the grammatical structure of the source sentence on structural choices for its translation. The results showed a significant influence of source sentence structure, which gradually decreased with increasing translation competence scores. In Experiment 2, we investigated to what extent the effect of source structure influence found in Experiment 1 can be accounted for through cross-linguistic structural priming. In a cross-linguistic priming experiment in which the source sentences from Experiment 1 were used as primes, participants showed no evidence of structural priming. A cross-experiment comparison revealed significant source sentence influence in the translation task, but no such effect in the priming task, for matched sets of sentences. Our results cast doubt on the claim that shining-through effects in translation are caused by cross-linguistic structural priming. We suggest an alternative account which instead explains structural cross-linguistic influence in translation through serial lexical co-activation.

The present study reports on the use of project-based learning in teaching business translation at the undergraduate level at two Yemeni universities; namely, Al-Saeed University and Taiz University. Two groups of students, one control and the other experimental, were selected. Both groups took a pre-test in business translation in which they were asked to translate several texts from Arabic into English, and vice versa. After the pre-test, the two groups completed a 3-month business translation course. Project-based translation training was used with the experimental group. The control group covered the content of the course in a traditional manner. Both groups were asked to take a post-test in business translation after completion of the course. The study concluded that the experimental group that completed the project-based training showed more progress than the control group. The difference between the mean of the two groups was found to be significant, at p < 0.05. Members of the experimental group were also interviewed about the project-based approach adopted in the programme to gain insights into its pros and cons.

The professional world of translation and interpreting is in constant change and evolution. For that reason, higher education should keep pace with the professional world and provide future translators with a comprehensive training. This includes training in emergent professional profiles, e.g., transcreation. This is the creative intra-or interlinguistic reinterpretation of a text for adapting it to the target public and is one of the most blooming trends in the translation industry. This work aims at describing an initiative carried out in an English-Spanish translation course at the University of Granada, in which transcreation training was included. First, following a simulated project-based approach, the design and elaboration of transcreation assignments based on the professional transcreation brief are addressed. Secondly, an assessment tool appropriate for the evaluation of such a subjective and creative activity is proposed. The starting point is the traditional rubric, used for the evaluation of translation assignments. An adapted rubric based on a descriptor scale evaluating four different criteria conceived to fit the purpose of transcreation training is presented, and conclusions are withdrawn.
