Acoustic stria: Anatomy of physiologically characterized cells and their axonal projection patterns

Abstract: The mammalian cochlear nucleus (CN) has been a model structure to study the relationship between physiological and morphological cell classes. Several issues remain, in particular with regard to the projection patterns and physiology of neurons that exit the CN dorsally via the dorsal (DAS), intermediate (IAS), and commissural stria. We studied these neurons physiologically and anatomically using the intra-axonal labeling method. Multipolar cells with onset chopper (O(C)) responses innervated the ipsilateral v… Show more

“…OnC's are hypothesized to provide glycinergic wideband-inhibitory inputs to the DCN and PVCN, and project to the contralateral CN (Smith et al, 2005(Smith et al, , 1989Arnott et al, 2004). OnI (octopus cells) units project to the contralateral ventral nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (VNLL) where they terminate in a calyx ending on cells that are glycinergic (e.g., Adams and Wenthold, 1987;Saint Marie et al, 1997;) and project to the ipsilateral inferior colliculus (IC).…”

“…Many, but probably not all, D stellate cells project to the contralateral cochlear nuclei (Arnott et al 2004;Cant and Gaston 1982;Needham and Paolini 2003). T stellate cells are narrowly tuned and fire tonically in responses to tones, whereas D stellate cells are more broadly tuned and fire transiently at the onset of tones (Arnott et al 2004;Blackburn and Sachs 1989;Jiang et al 1996;Nelken and Young 1994;Palmer and Winter 1996;Smith and Rhode 1989;Smith et al 2005).…”

“…This possibility is further substantiated by the 475 fact that these two cell types seem to have almost negligi-476 ble physiological differences in cats [37]; consequently, even 477 the simultaneous functional measurements cannot completely 478 exclude false identification.
