Acidolin: An Antibiotic Produced by Lactobacillus Acidophilus

Abstract: Acidolin was isolated from skimmilk cultured for 48 hours with Lactobacillus acidophilus (CHR. HANSEN's Laboratory strain 2181). It was extracted from the skimmilk with methanol and acetone and was further concentrated and purified by Sephadex G-25 gel filtration, high voltage electrophoresis, and thin-layer chromatography on silica gel. Ultraviolet, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectra results are presented for the antibiotic. Acidolin has a low molecular weight (-200), is acidic in nature, … Show more

“…These include the well-characterized bacteriocins (6,30,55), potential bacteriocinlike substances (57), and other antagonists not necessarily related to bacteriocins (24,36,44). The LAB are gram-positive, non-spore-forming, catalase-negative organisms devoid of cytochromes.…”

“…For example, it has been reported that antibioticassociated diarrhea and colitis have been controlled (5,11,15). The metabolic activation of carcinogens by the intestinal flora of humans and animals is suppressed by feeding them lactobacilli (9).…”

“…It is highly hygroscopic and thermo stable and reported to possess a yellow-brown color, produced by Lactobacillus acidophilus that kill or inhibits other microorganisms mainly of gram positive and gram negative strains including both enteropathogens and sporeformers. It was not effective against some of the lactic acid bacteria including the organism with which it was associated, L. acidophilus 2181 [5].…”

“…[5]. Though it was not effective against some of the lactic acid bacteria including the organism with which it was associated, L. acidophilus 2181 [5]. Studies also show that Lactobacillus bacteriocin inhibits the growth of bacteria like Bacillus mycoides, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Streptococcus faecalis.…”
