ObjectiveTo analyze the prevalence of morbidity due to traffic accidents in children and adolescents and its relationship with maxillofacial injuries in the city of Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil. Data Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed 533 forensic reports of individuals aged 0-19 years, victims of external causes in Campina RESUMOObjetivo Analisar a prevalência de morbidade por acidentes de trânsito em crianças e adolescentes e sua relação com lesões maxilofaciais na cidade de Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brasil. MétodoEstudo transversal, que analisou 533 laudos de exames de corpo de delito de indivíduos de 0 a 19 anos vitimados por causas externas em Campina Grande, Brasil, no ano de 2013. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um formulário, contendo as variáveis sexo, faixa etária, dia da semana, horário, tipo de acidente de trânsito, região do corpo acometida, presença de fratura, lesão maxilofacial e lesão na cavidade bucal. Utilizou-se o software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) para análise dos dados. Foram estimadas as razões de prevalência e intervalos de confiança a 95%, com emprego do teste do Qui-quadrado. ResultadosHouve predominância do sexo masculino (75,0%), e da faixa etária de 15 a 19 anos (65,0%), existindo associação entre sexo e ocorrência de acidente de transporte (p<0,001). O turno da tarde registrou 36,7% dos casos e os acidentes envolvendo motociclistas 55,0%. Em 25,0% dos casos houve injúrias na cabeça e em 26,7% na face. Fratura na cabeça e face foi verificada em 10,0% da amostra, enquanto lesões maxilofaciais e na cavidade bucal estiveram presentes em 21,7% e 6,7%, respectivamente. Verificou-se associação entre ocorrência do acidente e acometimento da região da face (p= 0,009). ConclusãoOs acidentes de trânsito acometem indivíduos jovens, do sexo masculino, acarretando múltiplas injúrias em distintas regiões do corpo, com lesões na região maxilofacial e cavidade bucal.Termos de indexação: Acidentes de trânsito. Objective: To analyze traffic accidents occurred in the age group 0-24 years treated at the Emergency Room of Cuiabá City in 2013. Method: Cross-sectional study with data captured through a closed form. Data analysis was done using Epi-Info. Results: Of the 2,122 calls, 67.9% were males aged 15-24 years (82.1%),49.7% occurred on weekends, and 9.6% occurred in December, highlighting the accidents with motorcycle/tricycle (71.0%), prevailing trauma of the upper limbs (30.4%) with immediate physical sequelae in 0.5% of the victims. Regarding the outcome, (95.7%) were discharged after treatment, and there were 7 deaths (0.3%). Conclusion: The significant occurrence of traffic accidents attended by the emergency service and emergency at hand, involving the study population, highlights the need for specific policies and prevention strategies. Em relação ao desfecho (95,7%), recebeu alta após o atendimento, e houve sete óbitos (0,3%). Conclusão: A ocorrência significativa de acidentes de trânsito atendidos pelo serviço de urgência e emergência em pauta, envolvendo a população do estudo, evidencia a necessidade de políticas e estratégias de prevenção específicas. Resultados: se produjeron los fines de semana, y corrieron 9,6% en diciembre, destacando -si los accidentes con motocicleta / triciclo (71,0%), predominando el trauma de las extremidades superiores (30,4%) con secuelas físicas inmediata en el 0,5% de las víctimas. En cuanto a los resultados (95,7%) fueron dados de alta después del tratamiento, y no hubo 7 muertes (0,3%). Conclusión: La presencia significativa de los accidentes de tráfico atendidos por el servicio de emergencia y de emergencia a la mano, con la participación de la población de estudio, pone de relieve la necesidad de políticas específicas y estrategias de prevención.

Non-motorized transportation modes, especially cycling and walking, offer numerous benefits, including improvements in the livability of cities, healthy physical activity, efficient urban transportation systems, less traffic congestion, less noise pollution, clean air, less impact on climate change and decreases in the incidence of diseases related to vehicular emissions. Considering the substantial number of short-distance trips, the time consumed in traffic jams, the higher costs for parking vehicles and restrictions in central business districts, many commuters have found that non-motorized modes of transportation serve as viable and economical transport alternatives. Thus, local governments should encourage and stimulate non-motorized modes of transportation. In return, governments must provide safe conditions for these forms of transportation, and motorized vehicle users must respect and coexist with pedestrians and cyclists, which are the most vulnerable users of the transportation system. Although current trends in sustainable transport aim to encourage and stimulate non-motorized modes of transportation that are socially more efficient than motorized transportation, few to no safety policies have been implemented regarding vulnerable road users (VRU), mainly in large urban centers. Due to the spatial nature of the data used in transport-related studies,859 geospatial technologies provide a powerful analytical method for studying VRU safety frameworks through the use of spatial analysis. In this article, spatial analysis is used to determine the locations of regions that are characterized by a concentration of traffic accidents (black zones) involving VRU (injuries and casualties) in São Paulo, Brazil (developing country), and Rome, Italy (developed country). The black zones are investigated to obtain spatial patterns that can cause multiple accidents. A method based on kernel density estimation (KDE) is used to compare the two cities and show economic, social, cultural, demographic and geographic differences and/or similarities and how these factors are linked to the locations of VRU traffic accidents. Multivariate regression analyses (ordinary least squares (OLS) models and spatial regression models) are performed to investigate spatial correlations, to understand the dynamics of VRU road accidents in São Paulo and Rome and to detect factors (variables) that contribute to the occurrences of these events, such as the presence of trip generator hubs (TGH), the number of generated urban trips and demographic data. The adopted methodology presents satisfactory results for identifying and delimiting black spots and establishing a link between VRU traffic accident rates and TGH (hospitals, universities and retail shopping centers) and demographic and transport-related data.
