Acid Insoluble Ash as a Marker of Digestibility for Sheep Fed Corn Plants or Hay and for Lactating Dairy Cattle Fed Hay Ad Libitum

Abstract: Research has shown acid insoluble ash (AIA) in feeds to be an acceptable natural marker for the determination of dry matter digestibility in sheep and steers fed diets of hay plus grain. However, in previous studies, animals were fed diets designed to ensure little or no orts. The purpose of this study was to determine the adequacy of AIA as an indicator of dry matter digestibility when sheep or dairy cows were fed ad libitum. Fecal, feed and ort samples from wethers and lactating Holstein cows from previous d… Show more

“…Total dry matter intake was estimated from Acid Insoluble Ash (AIA) concentrations of feeds consumed and feces voided (Block et al, 1981;ILCA, 1990). Samples of all diets browsed by goats were manually collected at each feeding station at the beginning, middle, and towards the end of the experiment and pooled together for Acid Insoluble Ash (AIA) determination.…”

“…An internal marker was used to estimate the amount of DM excreted in the faeces. Thonney et al [21] and Block et al [2] demonstrated that DM excretion is accurately assessed using an internal marker of 2N acid-insoluble ash, determined as described by Van Keulen and Young [25]. During the third week of each period, faecal samples were collected individually.…”

“…Research of Block et al. () has shown that correlation coefficient for DM digestibility determined by total collection versus AIA for dairy cows fed diets of alfalfa hay plus grain was 0.95 with the range of total recovery of AIA from 98.2% to 115.0%. Thonney et al.…”
