Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for electroconvulsive therapy‐induced cognitive side effects: a systematic review

Abstract: Despite large heterogeneity in studies, Ache-I appear to have beneficial effects on ECT-induced cognitive side effects, supporting an association with the cholinergic system in ECT-induced cognitive impairment. Methodological sound studies controlling for putative confounders are warranted. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…As Beijing Anding Hospital mainly serves patients with acute and severe psychiatric disorders, many patients with major depression have psychotic symptoms, which justified the high percentage of antipsychotic use in this study. The mean number of ECT sessions was 6.7 AE 2.3, which was in the lower range of the usual recommended number of sessions (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12) in treatment guidelines in China. 24 One reason for the low number of treatments may be the poor general health of older patients, which reduces their ability to tolerate many ECT sessions.…”
