Acellular dermal matrix allograft versus subepithelial connective tissue graft in treatment of gingival recessions: a 5‐year randomized clinical study

Abstract: Five-year results of SCTG and ADMA were similar in terms of CRC and reduction of RD and RW. Both techniques showed a significant relapse associated with returning to horizontal toothbrushing habit. Increase of GW was stable in SCTG-treated sites, but reached to pre-surgical values in ADMA-treated cases.

“…Another significant aspect is the phenotypic characteristics of gingival epithelium, as they are dependent on connective tissue 20 , and for that reason, the connective tissue graft is more efficient and increases the thickness and height of keratinized tissue compared to EMP 21 . Although no significant differences regarding keratinized tissue were detected between the SECT and ADM groups, in a study with a longer time for assessment, it was shown that SECT is also more effective in obtaining keratinized tissue than ADM 4 .…”

“…The connective tissue graft, being an autologous material, has shown more predictable results in root coverage and aesthetics and is regarded as the "gold standard" 3,6 . However, there are some disadvantages, such as the need for two surgical areas, one for obtaining the graft and the second in the area receiving the graft, which causes greater surgical time and inconvenience to the patient during the postoperative period 4,5 .…”
