Accuracy of dental images for the diagnosis of dental caries and enamel defects in children and adolescents: A systematic review

Abstract: Three studies found image analysis to be superior. For the remaining six studies the diagnostic accuracy was comparable. For enamel defects, three studies found image analysis to be superior, two found visual inspection to be superior and three studies reported comparable diagnostic accuracy. Most studies have found at least comparable results between photographic and visual inspection techniques. However, the wide variation in equipment and personnel used for the collection and interpretation of photographic … Show more

“…Despite the heterogeneity of the studies, there is a growing body of evidence supporting the use of teledentistry, in particular, for early detection of dental diseases. [11][12][13][14] A database search for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on teledentistry identified only four systematic reviews [15][16][17][18] but, to date, no meta-analyses on teledentistry have been published. The systematic reviews, however, were descriptive, as none considered the quality of evidence or research rigour in the evaluation of studies, and mainly addressed the feasibility or accuracy of various teledentistry applications.…”

“…On the other hand, dentistry has its specific aspects, but the reliability of transfer and review of digital photographs illustrating the status of the mouth cavity and teeth for the purpose of diagnosis of numerous dental and mouth cavity conditions, has been confirmed in a number of studies 26,27,28,29,30 .…”
