The preweaning period is a critical period for calves that extensively graze in tropical areas because calves are very susceptible to various heat stresses and ectoparasites. This condition is exacerbated by the low nutrient content in the natural grass available in the southern regions of West Java, Indonesia. Feeding flushing diets on the preweaning calves are expected to improve the calf 's performance. A study on the inclusion of flushing diets aims to improve preweaning calves' performance grazed extensively. The study used 15 male and 15 female preweaning Pasundan calves allocated to a completely randomized factorial design with two factors (gender: two levels and diets: three levels) and five replicates. The three levels of the diet factors were 1) grazing, 2) grazing and fed flushing diets without urea-impregnated zeolite, and 3) grazing and fed flushing diets containing urea-impregnated zeolite. The observed variables included morphometric variables (chest girth, chest depth, body length, shoulder height), body condition score, and body weight gain. The collected data were analyzed by a general linear model univariate analysis. The results showed that feeding of flushing diets increased (P <0.05) daily body weight gain (252.78 ± 77.22 g in grazing calves vs. 362.50 ± 141.69 in flushing-1 calves or 486.11 ± 173.47 g in flushing-2 calves) and improved (P <0.05) body condition score change (1.33 ± 0.51 in grazing calves vs. 2.33 ± 0.51 in flushing-2 calves) of the preweaning calves but did not affect the morphometric variables. In conclusion, the inclusion of both flushing diets increased daily body weight gain, and the inclusion of flushing diet containing urea-impregnated zeolite improved the preweaning calves' body condition score but did not affect the morphometric variables.

SUMMARYThe objective of the current study was to determine the accuracy of the prediction of live weight (LW) from body measurements (BMs) by using digital image analysis on female Holstein calves. The calves were measured with a measurement stick and digital image analysis. The following linear parameters were taken: body length (BL), wither height (WH), chest depth (CD), hip height (HH) and hip width (HW). LW and BMs were recorded at birth, at weaning and at 24 weeks of age. Regression coefficients, which included all BMs at birth, gave a low R2 value (66·7%), but the R2 value was found to be 87·6 and 86·0% at weaning and 24 weeks of age, respectively. A high correlation coefficient was found among LW and CD, HH and HW at weaning (0·90, 0·91 and 090, respectively) and at 24 weeks of age (0·89, 0·90 and 0·91, respectively). The results confirm that for female Holstein calves, digital image analysis is an effective measuring system for the prediction of LW from BMs.

ABSTRAKPengukuran morfometrik menggunakan citra digital memberikan beberapa keuntungan, antara lain lebih aman baik untuk peneliti maupun ternak, memberikan data yang lebih akurat, meminimalkan stres pada ternak serta memberikan data yang lebih detail dan lengkap. Penelitian ini menggunakan 20 ekor sapi Peranakan Ongole dan 20 ekor sapi Bali dengan umur rata-rata 3 tahun. Pengambilan citra digital menggunakan kamera DSLR dengan resolusi 18 Mp. Analisis data menggunakan program Image J. Parameter yang diamati adalah panjang badan, tinggi badan, tinggi hips, tinggi pelvis, tinggi loin, panjang Ossa vertebrae cervicales, panjang Ossa vertebrae thoracicae, panjang Ossa vertebrae lumbales, panjang Os scapula, panjang Os humerus, panjang Ossa radius-ulna, panjang Os metacarpale III, panjang Os femoris, panjang Ossa tibia-fibula, and panjang Os metatarsale III. Analisis Citra Digital mampu menggantikan pengukuran morfometrik manual dengan nilai keragaman yang rendah, yaitu di bawah 10. Aplikasi pengukuran pada sapi Peranakan Ongole dan Bali menunjukkan bahwa sapi Bali memiliki potensi deposisi perdagingan pada area sumbu tubuh sedangkan pada sapi Peranakan Ongole potensi deposisi perdagingan ada pada alat gerak depan dan belakang.Kata kunci: citra digital, morfometrik, perbandingan tubuh, sapi Peranakan Ongole, sapi Bali ABSTRACT Morphometric measurements using digital image technique give a lot of benefits i.e., a safer method both for the researchers and the experimental animals, produce a more accurate morphometric data, reduce the stress in the experimental animals and produce a more detail and complete morphometric data. This experiment used 20 Ongole cross cattle and 20 Bali cattle with the average age of 3 years. Digital image data were collected by using DSLR camera with 18Mp resolution. The collected digital image data were analyzed by using Image J program. Parameters measured in this observation were body length, body height, hip height, pelvic height, loin height, the length of ossa vertebrae cervicales, the length of ossa vertebrae thoracicae, the length of ossa vertebrae lumbales, the length of os scapula, the length of os humerus, the length of ossa radius-ulna, the length of os metacarpale III, the length of os femoris, the length of ossa tibia-fibula, and the length of os metatarsale III. Digital image technique could replace the manual technique for morphometric measurement with a lower level of variance (<10). Application of digital image technique for measurement of morphometric parameters in Ongole Cross and Bali cattle showed that Bali cattle has a potential for muscle deposition in body frame and body axis while Ongole Cross cattle has a potential for muscle deposition in fore and hind legs.
