Accuracy of B-mode ultrasound and ARFI elastography in predicting malignancy of canine splenic lesions

Abstract: The objective was to evaluate the accuracy of B-mode ultrasonography and ARFI elastography in detecting malignancy in canine splenic lesions. Thirty-seven spleens with abnormalities (16 benign and 21 malignant) from dogs of different breeds and ages were evaluated. Echogenicity, echotexture, organ length and height were evaluated using B-mode. By ARFI elastography, tissue stiffness was evaluated qualitatively (elastogram) and quantitatively (measuring the shear wave velocity—SWV). Lesions were classified as di… Show more

“…ARFI elastography has provided important information about the morphostructural behavior of tissues, making it possible to differentiate healthy structures from diseased ones in dogs through variations in tissue stiffness [18][19][20]. Although this study failed to obtain diagnostic results with elastography for CHD in joint and periarticular structures, it was possible to identify changes in the elasticity of the pectineus musculature between healthy and sick young animals.…”

“…Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography is an ultrasonographic technique that allows for quantitative and qualitative measurement of changes in tissue stiffness [18][19][20] by evaluating deformation according to Hooke's law. In general, elastography can be used to differentiate affected tissue (with morphostructural alterations) from normal tissue [21].…”

“…Ultrasonographic evaluation of the abdominal cavity aims to look for peritoneal effusion, presence and characterization of nodules in the spleen and liver, and search for metastasis in adjacent organs [ 109 , 111 , 112 ]. The characterization of splenic tumors is based on their size, echogenicity, and number of nodules, as well as the presence or absence of cavitation.…”

“…Elastography, which evaluates tissue stiffness using ultrasound, can also enhance B-mode study. Maronezi et al (2022) [ 112 ] achieved an accuracy of 97% for differentiating malignant lesions, and the higher occurrence of malignancy was attributed to the diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma. Malignant lesions are more rigid than benign ones, verifying this characteristic in the elastogram and values greater than 2.6 m/s for shear velocity.…”
