Accuracy of an Electronic Apex Locator in the Retreatment of Teeth Obturated with Plastic or Cross-linked Gutta-percha Carrier-based Materials: An Ex Vivo Study

Abstract: The measurements obtained with the EAL tested during orthograde retreatments can lead clinicians to overinstrumentation and consequent overfilling of the endodontic space.

“…Some researchers measure the minor diameter (apical constriction), whereas others measure the major diameter or apical foramen [56]. It is worth noting that EALs are highly accurate in determining the location of the minor constriction, but the mean distance from the file tip to the minor constriction always has a positive value [56, 57]. This means that EALs mostly overestimate the WL.…”

“…Therefore, according to previous studies, during retreatment, it is impossible to completely remove the residual materials, sealer, gutta-percha, and solvents from the root canals, which affects the EAL readings. 17,18 The present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of three EALs (Dentaport ZX, ProPex Pixi, and iPex II) in the determination of working length during root canal retreatment. EALs operate on electrical principles rather than being dependent on the biological properties of the tissue involved.…”

“…WL studies rarely include huge volumes of data, and the results are mainly continuous numbers of distances to a target landmark. The raw data can be simply presented by plotting data points in Box Plots of different groups, or when pairwise analysis is performed, differences can be presented in relation to the equality line (Mancini et al, 2014; Miletic et al, 2011; Stoll et al, 2010; Uzun et al, 2008).…”
