Accuracy and safety of second-generation PillCam COLON capsule for colorectal polyp detection

Abstract: PillCam COLON capsule endoscopy (CCE) (Given Imaging Ltd, Yoqneam, Israel) is one of the most recent diagnostic, endoscopic technologies designed to explore the colon. CCE is a noninvasive, patient-friendly technique that is able to explore the colon without requiring sedation and air insufflation. The first generation of CCE was released onto the market in 2006 and although it generated great enthusiasm, it showed suboptimal accuracy. Recently, a second-generation system (PillCam COLON 2) (CCE-2) has been dev… Show more

“…Exclusion criteria were those previously reported for small bowel capsule enteroscopy, CCE and CTC 23 24 25 28 17. In detail, patients with dysphagia or any swallowing disorder, congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency, prior abdominal surgery of the gastrointestinal tract (other than uncomplicated procedures that would be unlikely to lead to bowel obstruction), cardiac pacemaker or other implanted electromedical device, allergy or other known contraindication to the medications used in the study; patients expected to undergo MRI examination within 7 days after ingestion of the capsule, with any condition believed to have an increased risk for capsule retention (such as Crohn's disease, intestinal tumours, radiation enteritis, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs enteropathy), women either pregnant or nursing at the time of screening, who intended to be pregnant during the study period, or were of childbearing potential and were not practicing medically acceptable methods of contraception.…”

“…In a study of 104 patients, the PillCam® COLON2’s sensitivity and specificity for polyps ≥ 6 mm and ≥ 10 mm was 89% and 76%, and 88% and 89%, respectively (18). To accelerate CE transit through the colon and distend the lumen around the capsule, sodium phosphate has been added to the traditional pre-procedural patient solution of polyethylene glycol (19). The PillCam® COLON2 is actively used in Europe and Japan and has gained FDA clearance in 2014 in the United States for use in patients following an incomplete colonoscopy (www.givenimaging.com).…”
