Sedimentary rocks provide key information on source-to-sink systems and the regional expression of plate tectonics. The abruptly changing provenance signature of sedimentary rocks is commonly ascribed to changes in the source regions, such as continental collision events, the rise of mountain chains, reorganization of river systems and climatic change. However, moving the positions of the sinks (depocenters) geographically can also change the provenance record, but this is rarely considered. Typically, large-scale strike-slip faults can transport depocenters for long distances, thus altering the provenance information. In this study, we present a systematic investigation of the provenance changes in the Sikhote-Alin orogenic belt in the Russian Far East to evaluate this process. The Central Sikhote-Alin Fault is a margin-parallel strike-slip fault that developed along the NE Asian continental margin from the late Mesozoic. Our new detrital zircon U-Pb data, together with a compilation of geochronological data, indicate two different types of provenance signatures available: the sediments to the west of the fault were mainly derived from the adjacent Central Asian Orogenic Belt, but to the east of the fault, they were mainly supplied from the Korean Peninsula, which is several hundred kilometers away. It is proposed that these different sedimentary rocks were juxtaposed by synand post-subduction sinistral displacements along the fault, and were not related to local variations in the source regions. Thus, understanding the shifting positions of depocenters is important when decoding provenance change because lateral displacement is critical for reconstructing regional paleogeography along oblique convergent plate margins.Plain Language Summary Drainage systems on Earth's continents carry abundant sediments from their sources to sinks. These sediments, which record climatic, topographic, tectonic and river dynamic information during their journeys, are finally preserved as sedimentary rocks. By studying them, geologists can decode the ancient source-to-sink systems. Events occurring in the source regions are always emphasized to explain the varying information in the sediments. For example, the rise of mountains can migrate river's watershed and drainage basins, changing the characteristics of materials. Sometimes, however, simply moving positions of the sinks/basins also can achieve similar effects, such as basins moved by large strike-slip faults. Here, our research in Sikhote-Alin, Russian Far East shows that the sediments have two age spectrum patterns, indicating two provenance types along the NE Asian margin during the late Mesozoic. We suggest that the two types were juxtaposed by a large-scale strike-slip fault during and/or after their deposition. The different provenance features in Sikhote-Alin was caused by the large-scale margin-parallel motion, instead of any variations in the sources. The Circum-Pacific Late Albian-Cenomanian orogenic belts (including the Sikhote-Alin-Western-Sakhalin belt) were formed as a result of the deformation of mainly epioceanic terranes – fragments of Jurassic-Early Cretaceous accretionary wedges with ophiolites and other fragments of oceanic crust, turbidite basins, and island-arc systems. To the west of the Sikhote-Alin - Northern-Sakhalin belt and orthogonally, there are structures of earlier consolidation, which include the Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka fragment of the orogenic belt of the Late Cambrian-Early Ordovician consolidation of the Late Proterozoic - Cambrian complexes. Within this belt, four isolated outcrops of the Heilongjiang complex are mapped, combining metamorphites of the epidote-amphibolite and glaucophane-schist facies and representing a fragment of an accretionary wedge of the Jurassic age. It was assumed that these outcrops marked the suture, i.e., represented the remains of the closed Mudanjiang paleoocean, separating the original Jiamusi terrane (and the Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka belt) located to the west of Central Asia structures. The proposed article provides data that the Heilongjiang complex does not mark a suture, but is an underground near-horizontal continuation of the marginal continental accretionary wedge of the Nadanhad - Bikin terrane (flat subduction model) brought to the surface at the site of the antiform bending. The unity of the compared parts of the accretionary wedge is emphasized by the close matrix age, the similarity of detritus zircon populations, and the similarity of the composition and age of allochthonous inclusions (limestone, chert, Late Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic basalt). An important common feature is that Late Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic basalts from allochthonous inclusions in both cases are represented by the N-MORB and OIB types, with no traces of suprasubduction volcanism in the matrix. The Heilongjiang complex forms, according to this interpretation, a tectonic window among the more ancient formations of the Jiamusi terrane. There is no need to assume the existence of the Mudanjiang Ocean to explain the formation of the Heilongjiang complex. The features of the structure of this complex and the conditions of its occurrence can be explained by the processes of flat subduction of the Pacific slab in the Jurassic and its deformation in the Early Cretaceous.

Two mineralization events in the Laozuoshan Au deposit, north‐east China: Evidence from Re–Os geochronology and trace element geochemistry

The Laozuoshan deposit, located in the central Jiamusi Block of north-east China, is characterized by two types of mineralization, including principal skarn-type Au mineralization occurring along the contact zone between granite and migmatite, and minor auriferous quartz-arsenopyrite veins hosting in plagiogranite and granite. Re-Os dating of auriferous pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite were performed to determine the metallogenic ages of the Laozuoshan gold deposit. Analyses of arsenopyrite from quartz vein-type ores yield a weighted average model age of 89.0 ± 3.1 Ma (mean standard weighted deviation(MSWD) = 9.3), which is within uncertainty in agreement with the 187 Re/ 188 Os versus 187 Os/ 188 Os isochron age of 93.2 ± 2.6 Ma (MSWD = 1.3) and the 187 Re versus 187 Os isochron age of 97 ± 14 Ma (MSWD = 7.4). Pyrrhotite samples from skarn-type ores have model ages from 82.6 Ma to 424.8 Ma, indicating an unclosed Re-Os isotope system. However, the skarn-type Au mineralization likely occurred during the Permian following the emplacement of the Laozuoshan granite.Results of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) trace element analysis show that element contents in sulphides from different types of ores are systematically different. Au, Ag, Bi, Pb, Co, and Ni are significantly enriched in skarn-type arsenopyrite. These data suggest that the Laozuoshan deposit formed from two gold mineralization events. Combined with previous studies, we suggest that the skarn-type Au mineralization was associated with the subduction of the Panthalassic oceanic plate, whereas the rollback of the Palaeo-Pacific Plate was responsible for the quartz vein-type Au mineralization in the Laozuoshan deposit. The multiple mineralization events have important implications for regional exploration.
