The “First-Last Mile” problem (FLM) is a relevant transport issue. According to the Green Paper on Urban Mobility, the combination of passenger and freight flows may be a valid approach to promote sustainable, efficient and socially desirable FLM transport. This paper proposes a set of key performance indicators to evaluate potential improvements in operational, environmental and social performances of integrated passenger and freight flows, compared to the current transport schemes. The two case studies of the Northern lagoon of Venice in Italy and the Slovenian Municipality of Velenje indicate that the model may be particularly effective in those cases where reduced freight volumes, limited freight pickup/delivery locations and a lower elasticity of the travel demand reduce the constraints to the adoption of this integrated scheme. Results call for a reduction both in distances travelled and in externalities produced, and hence a good potential in FLM terms. Beside these technical aspects, one of the main issues is the need for innovation in the normative/regulatory context: a prerequisite in order to apply this solution to real-life contexts.

In recent years, Vehicular Networks have received much attention because they can contribute to solving several problems of urban scenarios. An interesting perspective to characterize these urban problems is to study vehicles' mobility records to increase our knowledge about them. Thus, an alternative is to model these records as graphs enabling us to apply algorithms and graph theory to design new solutions for vehicular networks. This work explores three different strategies to model vehicular networks and analyzes two real well-known traces from Rome and San Francisco. We perform a study on the network aspect, measuring metrics that portray some network characteristics and proprieties. We highlight the advantages and limitations of each approach evaluated. Also, we present some applications and future directions for the knowledge extracted with this analysis.

The paper aims to assess bus accessibility considering the matching between supply and demand for effectively optimizing the level and fairness of urban public transport service, which realizes the quantification of regional balance and accurate positioning the area with the worst balance. We firstly employ hotspot detection procedure based on taxi trajectory data and kernel density analysis to identify the travel sensitive areas, the heat values of which are deployed to represent travel demand spatial-temporally and evaluate weight factors for bus accessibility modeling. Matter-element theory is selected to establish multi-parameter evaluation model of bus accessibility, which has potential for solving incompatibility problems by systematically considering all factors. The correlations between accessibility indexes and heat value are deployed to evaluate weight factors rather than analytic hierarchy process or expert assessment method to improve subjectivity and dynamic updating. An index called the Level Ratio of Accessibility to Demand (LRAD) is addressed finally to quantify the balance between accessibility supply and travel demand of travel sensitive areas, which identifies the regional imbalance to assist the public transport system assignment. Xi'an, a large city, is selected as a case study for methodology verification. Bus accessibility degree of the whole city as well as its travel sensitive areas is evaluated by the matter-element model. It is found the bus transport accessibility of Xi'an is moderate level(M 3). The LRAD results identify the priority-processing area with the poor balance between accessibility supply and travel demand, which is cross referenced with local urban plans for verification.
