Acceptance of Information Technology and the Internet by People Aged Over Fifty in Taiwan

Abstract: Information technology and the Internet are becoming increasingly important in daily life for acquiring knowledge or information. Unfortunately, although the population aged over 50 is increasing, many current websites are not suitable for their use (Payne, 2002; Ryu, Kim, & Lee, 2009). We constructed a research model based on the technology acceptance model (TAM; Davis, 1986) and analyzed acceptance of accessible page systems by people aged over 50, using the Taoyuan Gueishan Township Office website as a… Show more

“…In a review of 19 technology acceptance studies, it could be shown that 'TAM is […] effective when applied to older Internet adoption by the elderly Björn Niehaves and Ralf Plattfaut adults' (Chen & Chan, 2011, p. 9). This is underlined by a study using TAM to explain elderly people's e-government webpage usage in Taiwan (Tseng et al, 2012). However, research in this area still lacks a comprehensive explanation of why the elderly are more reluctant to accept (information) technologies (Chen & Chan, 2011).…”

“…In order to overcome such limitations, researchers modified TRA and TAM to report additional perceptions and beliefs that further contribute to the user's intention and usage (Kim, 2011;Liang & Yeh, 2011;Nasri & Charfeddine, 2012;Tseng, Hsu, & Chung, 2012). Additionally, the Sport Website Acceptance Model (SWAM; Hur, Ko, & Claussen, 2011a), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology Model (UTAUT; Venkatesh, Morris, Davis, & Davis, 2003), and UTAUT 2 (Venkatesh, Thong, and Xu, 2012) were developed to further explore users' technology adoption intentions.…”

“…The TAM has been applied and modified in various studies to understand users' intentions and perceptions towards different evolving technology usage. To date, researchers have used TAM to examine various types of technology use such as online sport consumption motivations (Hur, et al, 2011a;Hur, et al, 2011b), mobile consumption (Jiang, 2009;Jung, Perez-Mira, & Wiley-Patton, 2009;Lee, Ryu, & Kim, 2010), and information technology (Tseng et al, 2012). (Davis, 1989) Even with rapid changes in technology trends, TAM is still powerful in comprehensively capturing users' intention to adopt technology.…”
