Acceleration of the redox kinetics of VO2+/VO2 + and V3+/V2+ couples on carbon paper

Abstract: The redox kinetics of VO 2? /VO 2 ? and V 3? / V 2? couples on a carbon paper (CP, HCP030 N, Shanghai Hesen, Ltd., China) electrode were investigated in terms of their standard rate constant (k 0 ) and reaction mechanism. The values determined for k 0 for VO 2? ? VO 2 ? and V 3? ? V 2? using the CP electrode are 1.0 9 10 -3 and 1.1 9 10 -3 cm s -1 , respectively. The value of k 0 increases by one or two order(s) of magnitude compared with values obtained using electrodes composed of pyrolytic graphite and glas… Show more

“…32 The effect of catalyst incorporation into the carbon paper electrode was also studied by Zhang et al by coating WO 3 nanoprticles and activated carbon on the surface. 40 Compared to bare carbon paper electrode, the proposed electrode showed a notable improvement in the V 2+ /V 3+ and VO 2 + /VO 2+ redox reactions.…”

“…The kinetics of both the V II /V III and V IV /V V redox couples have been studied for a range of different carbon materials using a variety of techniques and it is clear that the kinetic rates depend strongly both on the type of carbon used and on the preparation of the electrode surface. 31,[35][36][37][38] Generally, the kinetics are found to be faster for V IV [17][18][19]21 and inhibition of V IV /V V electrode kinetics 17-21 by anodic treatment. In this paper we report detailed results on the effects of both anodic and cathodic treatment on the kinetics of the V IV /V V couple at carbon electrodes (glassy carbon, graphite, carbon paper, reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC), and carbon fibers).…”
