“…The elevated insulin levels in hypothyroid animals may have at least two underlying causes. The increased adiposity that is generally associated with the hypothyroid state decreases the insulin sensitivity of peripheral tissues, thereby increasing insulin requirement, which is met by increased insulin secretion by the pancreas (29,30). Alternatively, a direct decrease in insulin sensitivity in hypothyroidism, as has been suggested previously (31), may contribute to the elevated circulating insulin levels.…”
