Introduction: Isla del Coco is an important protected area for marine fauna in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. In this area, the species that inhabit the intertidal zone have been subject to few studies. One of the species inhabiting these areas is the clingfish Gobiesox adustus (Gobiesocidae). Objective: To analyze for the first time the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) of G. adustus’ population from Isla del Coco and compare it with those of continental coast of Costa Rica and Ecuador. Methods: We constructed a haplotype network for these samples. Genetic diversity, distance and structure were calculated by several software. The historical demography of Isla del Coco samples was assessed with the method Bayesian skyline plot as implemented in BEAST2. Results: The samples segregate into three haplogroups: one consisting of the Isla del Coco samples, a second consisting of a subset of the Ecuador samples, and a third consisting of Costa Rica and the remaining Ecuador samples. The genetic distances between the three haplogroups range between 1.6% and 2.1% (uncorrected p-distance), and pairwise ΦST and AMOVA results between the three haplogroups show high and significant values. Conclusions: The Isla del Coco haplogroup showed a Pleistocene population growth, which agrees with demographic patterns found in other marine organisms. The history of isolation of the G. adustus population from Isla del Coco demonstrates the evolutionary independence of this population.

Mangroves are highly productive ecosystems that provide important environmental services, but have been impacted massively in recent years by human activities. Studies of mangroves have focused on their ecology and function at local or landscape scales, but little has been done to understand their broader distributional patterns or the environmental factors that determine those distributions. Species distribution models (SDMs), have been used to estimate potential distributions of hundreds of species, yet no SDM studies to date have assessed mangrove community distributions in Mexico (the country with the fourth largest extent of this ecosystem). We used maximum entropy approaches to model environmental suitability for mangrove species distributions in the country, and to identify the environmental factors most important in determining those distributions. We also evaluated whether this modeling approach is adequate to estimate mangrove distribution as a community across Mexico. Best models were selected based on statistical significance (AUC ratio), predictive performance (omission error of 5%), and model complexity (Akaike criterion); after this evaluation, only one model per species met the three evaluation criteria. Environmental variable sets that included distance to coast yielded significantly better models; variables with strongest contributions included elevation, temperature of the coldest month, and organic carbon content of soil. Based on our results, we conclude that SDMs can be used to map mangrove communities in Mexico, but that results can be improved at local scales with inclusion of local variables (salinity, hydroperiod and microtopography), field validations, and remote sensing data.

Octopus insularis, despite being widely fished from Brazil to Mexico, has only recently been described as a different species from the sympatric Octopus vulgaris complex in the tropical Atlantic, where its occurrence is determined by different environmental factors. Using a 10‐year time series from Brazil, we modeled how topographic aspects and oceanographic variables affected the landings of O. insularis. For that we used a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) technique and residual autocovariate‐boosted regression trees (RAC‐BRTs). In addition to the octopus landing per unit effort (LPUE) being driven by the seafloor structure, we also observed that it was directly related to the temperature and inversely related to chlorophyll. Higher LPUEs were observed in warmer years. Although the relationship between LPUE and chlorophyll or temperature has not yet been explained under laboratorial conditions, the higher catches observed at higher temperatures may be both a result of the local fishing dynamics and a warning toward the possibility of future niche expansion, due to climate change. If the latter is confirmed, octopus fisheries in parts of the South Atlantic would need to adapt to a smaller, and thus cheaper, body‐sized species.
