Absorption Tuning of Monosubstituted Triazatruxenes for Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

Abstract: A series of triazatruxene (TAT)-functionalized Bodipy dyes were prepared by a sequence of reactions involving either cross-coupling reactions promoted by Pd complexes or a Knoevenagel reaction leading to a vinyl linker. The new dyes show large absorption coefficients and fluorescence quantum yields as well as interesting electrochemical properties. The blue dyes of this series exhibit interesting photovoltaic effects (V(OC) = 0.83 V, J(SC) = 3.6 mA/cm(2), efficiency 0.9%) in bulk heterojunction solar cells, du… Show more

“…Formation of the mono‐functionalized analogue might be explained in terms of julolidine being a strong electron donor that influences the acidity of the methyl group located at the 5‐position on the BODIPY core. In any event, the result is the second known example of selective mono‐condensation of a BODIPY dye with an electrophilic aldehyde 31. Transformation of JL into the carbaldehyde derivative 4 was realized using a carboformylation reaction catalyzed by a palladium(II) precursor and with sodium formate as the reducing reagent under a flow of CO at atmospheric pressure.…”

“…13 Accordingly, a bulk heterojunction solar cell assembled with the dye and PC 61 BM showed a high power conversion efficiency 4.7%. 13 In our previous report, it was shown that the conjugated polymers containing Aza-BODIPY derivatives exhibited strong deep-red or near-infrared emission and formed various supramolecular self-assembled structures. 14 Thus, it was presumed that the main-chain type element-block polymers composed of these units should present high ET ability.…”

“…In this context, triazatruxene (TAT), consisting of three, fused, carbazole modules of C 3 symmetry, is a particularly interesting chemical unit. It can be adequately functionalized and easily linked to photoactive fragments 21. In addition, electron‐donating TAT units provide both, a good π–π stacking ability due to the perfectly flat conjugated core, and high solubility due to easy alkylation of the indole moieties.…”
