Absorption spectra time evolution of EBT‐2 model GAFCHROMIC™ film

Abstract: By comparing the resultant change in net absorbance between the latest EBT-2 and previous EBT GAFCHROMIC film models, the authors conclude that the addition of the yellow marker dye to the sensitive layer does not affect dosimetric properties of the latest film model. The authors also describe a procedure by which one can establish an acceptable time window around chosen postirradiation scanning time protocol that would provide an acceptable dose error for practical purposes.

“…In 2009, the GAFCHROMIC EBT film was replaced by the GAFCHROMIC EBT2 film that incorporates a yellow marker dye in the active layer and a synthetic polymer as the binder component. Several works have been published studying some EBT and EBT2 properties, such as film homogeneity, ( 1 , 2 ) scanning orientation dependence, ( 3 7 ) energy dependence, ( 4 , 8 10 ) absorption spectra, ( 11 ) postcoloration behavior, ( 2 , 4 5 , 7 8 , 12 13 ) high‐dose dependence, ( 7 ) temperature dependence, ( 7 , 14 15 ) and ambient light sensitivity. “…The properties of these EBT films have been reported in several publications, based on investigations conducted by using several types of photon, electron, and proton beams 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 . Their energy response 7 , 8 , 11 absorption spectra (9) scanning orientation dependence 10 , 11 film homogeneity (12) temperature dependence 10 , 13 ambient light sensitivity (10) postexposure coloration 10 , 11 and variations among different lot numbers (14) were analyzed. The use of EBT3 films is limited to doses below 1000 cGy, owing to the optimality constraint on the film's red channel (10) .…”

“…For MV beams, EBT, EBT2, and EBT3 GAFCHROMIC film models were used extensively to measure therapeutic doses over wide dose range and the same dosimetry protocols apply for imaging. The dosimetric properties of these films were tested widely in the literature in terms of absorption spectra, (24) postirradiation waiting time, 24 , 25 scanning mode and exposure to light, 25 , 26 high temperature behavior, (25) performance in water, (27) depth dose measurements, (28) and energy dependence 29 , 30 …”
