Absorption and metabolic fate of bioactive dietary benzoxazinoids in humans

Abstract: These results indicate that following ingestion in healthy humans, a range of unmetabolized bioactive dietary benzoxazinoids and their sulfate and glucuronide conjugates appear in circulation and urine.

“…In rats, 3 benzoxazinoid compounds (HBOA, HBOA glucose, and DIBOA glucose) were detected in plasma 3 h after feeding (17). In humans, circulating plasma benzoxazinoids were detected 1-3 hours after the intake of a benzoxazinoid-rich breakfast and were identified as HBOA glucose and DIBOA glucose with negligible amount of HBOA (18). In our study, none of these benzoxazinoids were found based on their accurate mass and MS/MS fragmentation in the plasma.…”

“…Recently, there were several targeted, quantitative approaches on the characterization of bioavailability and absorption of dietary benzoxazinoids in rats (17), pigs (16), and humans (18). In rats, 3 benzoxazinoid compounds (HBOA, HBOA glucose, and DIBOA glucose) were detected in plasma 3 h after feeding (17).…”

“…Recent metabolomic studies have reported an increase in urinary excretions of some benzoxazinoid metabolites in human intervention studies with different types of whole-grain breads (Beckmann et al 2013;Bondia-Pons et al 2013) and after a 5-week dietary intervention with high fibre doses (Johansson-Persson et al 2013). Furthermore, Adhikari et al (2013) were also tentatively identified. Their levels were higher among WGB consumers.…”

“…in minor amounts. The benzoxazinoids can serve as biomarkers of whole grain as they are absorbed and metabolized by the body (Adhikari et al, 2013). Anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anticarcinogenic effects of individual benzoxazinoids were reported (Poupaert, Carato, & Colacillo, 2005).…”
