Absolute emission current density of O− from 12CaO⋅7Al2O3 crystal

Abstract: Strong and high purity O− negative ion emission has been observed from a synthesized crystal 12CaO⋅7Al2O3 surface. A μA/cm2-level O− emission from this material has been achieved at the surface temperature of 800 °C and the extraction field over 1000 V/cm, which is about three orders of magnitude higher than the current density emitted from the Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 electrolyte surface. The strong emissivity of this material, as well as easy and economical fabrication, may provide a useful tool to generate the … Show more

“…Nearly pure O À ion emission from the surface was confirmed by mass spectroscopy. [30][31][32][33] This result is in clear contrast from the YSZ, which emits equimolar O À ions and electrons. When the sample was heated to %800 C and the applied field was increased to %1 kV cm À1 , the O À current density exceeded %1 mA cm À2 , which is three orders of magnitude higher than that obtained in the YSZ emitter.…”

“…Such emission shows a maximum current density of 2.74 (μAcm -2 ) which is three times higher than the maximum value recorded for the conventional Y-stabilised ZrO2 (YSZ) [48].…”

“…There is a strong correlation between the Oˉ ion emissions from C12A7: Oˉ + O2ˉ and the surface temperature as well as the applied extraction field [25], [44], [48]. A Complete discussion of this subject is not considered in this work.…”

“…The emission intensity increases with either parameter. The average activation energy was 0.7 eV, which is considerably smaller than that observed for thermal O − ion (∼ 2.0−2.5 eV) [50][51][52][53][54][55] and electron emissions (∼ 6 eV) [56] from zirconia.…”
