‘Absentmindedly scrolling through nothing’: liveness and compulsory continuous connectedness in social media

Abstract: Social media fuel a sense of unsettledness to encourage uninterrupted connectivity and generate quantifiable engagement. This article is concerned with the habitual, naturalized character acquired by these platforms and with how this is paradoxically constructed by prompting a permanent state of anticipation. The aim here is to explore, with a phenomenological sensibility, the experiences that emerge in settings of continuous connectedness from the perspective of the people who use these technologies … Show more

“…UnlockMe is a concept to virtually co-locate users in their online activities and provide them with a channel for synchronous or asynchronous communication across the web, for a broad variety of activities that could be performed on the web such as entertainment, work and shopping. Our concept diferentiates from social media such as Facebook [8] and Instagram [14], by being centred on activity triggered social exchange, contrary to providing multimedia content and advertisements for absentminded scrolling [20]. We also diferentiate from messaging apps such as WhatsApp [37] as the user does not need to move away from their current web activity to another messaging app and they can meet people serendipitously, without setting up dedicated chat groups for each topic or each contact network.…”

“…Studies that focus on identifying, describing, and validly measuring (new) empirical phenomena are an essential initial step towards cumulative theory developments in digital media effects. This could mean capturing ordinary people's perceptions of so-cial media platforms based on diary interviews (Lupinacci, 2020) or describing differences in smartphone usage using device logs rather than self-reports (Geyer et al, 2021;Parry et al, 2021). Such descriptively valid knowledge is necessary before attempting to explain and understand the causes and consequences of these observable patterns (Smaldino, 2019).…”
