The multiple nature of time has by now been well established across a wide range of scholarly traditions in the humanities and social sciences. The article takes that insight as a starting point, in order to discuss the tools, work, sites and contestations involved in common temporal frameworks and structures that cross and join together time’s multiplicities. We thus articulate and discuss key components of synchronisation, a concept with significant potential for understanding common temporalities and social orders. Our emphasis is particularly on media, their technological and representational affordances for synchronisation. The article’s approach to social and mediated times presents an alternative to Hartmut Rosa and François Hartog’s influential theories about the temporal configuration of the present historical moment. Their understanding of the present tends more towards unity and uniformity, particularly by means of chronology. We follow Luhmann in arguing that ‘there is no supersynchronization’ producing such privileged, unitary temporal orders. We propose pursuing an understanding of both present and past through investigations of synchronisation itself, which always exists in plural, always involves different synchronisations in competition with each other, is subject to social and historical contingencies. The article combines theoretical and conceptual arguments with historical and contemporary cases. We investigate the synchronisation of national collectives by means of broadcast media, of individuals in everyday life by means of social media, and the recalibration of various contemporary media to a global scale in order to tackle the issue of climate change. These cases move from past and relatively comprehensive forms of synchronisation, via more localised forms today, to highly uncertain and heterogeneous ones in the future.

Our concept diferentiates from social media such as Facebook [8] and Instagram [14], by being centred on activity triggered social exchange, contrary to providing multimedia content and advertisements for absentminded scrolling [20]. We also diferentiate from messaging apps such as WhatsApp [37] as the user does not need to move away from their current web activity to another messaging app and they can meet people serendipitously, without setting up dedicated chat groups for each topic or each contact network.…”

All the activities that we do online, by either preference or obligation, deprive us of social interactions especially the impromptu ones. We present UnlockMe, a concept that aims at preserving the social link, the disposition to come across other people serendipitously when engaged in online activities such as purchasing goods, working from home or when viewing media and entertainment. Our concept relies on virtual co-location detection (both synchronous and asynchronous), to allow users to engage with other people with whom they would have been likely to interact when doing the same activities ofine in the physical world. We developed and illustrated UnlockMe with six scenarios and low-fdelity prototyping to test it with 10 participants who were isolated due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Our fndings reveal multimedia recommendations from close social connections to be the best scenario for UnlockMe followed by online shopping and connecting with the local community. How can we live a good life both thanks to and despite the constant use of digital media? The presented proto-theory of digital well-being offers guidance for theory development and theory integration to enable a cumulative science of the impacts of digital media use on well-being. The proto-theory describes the nature of and connections between three relevant phenomena—digital practices, harms/benefits, and well-being—and creates a blueprint for explanatory theories. It focuses on the mechanisms between digital media use and well-being by analyzing the often concomitant harms and benefits arising from individual’s digital practices within structural conditions; these mechanisms are theoretically plausible causal chains that lead from a specific manifestation of digital practice to a relevant individual well-being outcome with some regularity. Future digital well-being studies should prioritize descriptive validity and longitudinal designs.
