“…Few studies have documented the circulation of VACV in synanthropic and wild rodents (Abrahão et al, 2009; Miranda et al, 2017), and also in other sylvatic animals such as primates, marsupials and coatis (Abrahão et al, 2009; Costa et al, 2018; Lima et al, 2019; Miranda et al, 2017; Oliveira et al, 2017). Aiming to include the wildlife in the VACV transmission cycle, ecological models have been proposed (Costa et al, 2017, 2018; Lima et al, 2019; Oliveira et al, 2017). According to the models, sylvatic animals could potentially act in VACV transmission between rural, wild and even urban environments (Abrahão et al, 2009; Costa et al, 2018; Lima et al, 2019; Oliveira et al, 2017).…”

“…Brazilian Journal of Health Review, Curitiba, v. 6, n. 2, p. 7014-7028, mar./apr., 2023Other limiting factor for the study were the absence of a positive clinical sample for VACV that would serve as a clinical control for the developed experiments, which would allow a real evaluation of performance of this assay in real samples, including those containing interferents. The use of a clinical sample would also allow a more accurate assessment in terms of sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic test proposed here, which was not possible, being considered a weakness of the present study.Regarding the VGF primer used in this work, due to the good conservation of the C11R duplicated gene, it is useful as a genetic marker for the identification of OPXV species, being widely used in several works(FRANCO-LUIZ et al, 2016; ASSIS et al, 2013; 2012;COSTA et al, 2017). Despite any limitations related to the realization or progress of this research, the data presented here strongly suggest the absence of VACV circulation, or the presence at undetectable levels, in the bovine and buffalo samples from these five farms in the Marajó region, Brazil.…”
