AbstractIntroduction: Children and adolescent's abuse is a frequent and serious problem worldwide. Objective: Test students' knowledge about the types of abuse described in the Child and Adolescent Statute. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study carried out through the application of a questionnaire to 384 medical students from the "Faculdades Integradas Padre Albino," Catanduva-SP, from August to October 2016. The variables analyzed were: grade, age, gender, and seven questions about how much did the students know with respect of the Child and Adolescent Statute and the medical practice related to it. Results: Participants accounted for 93.2% of enrolled students, of which 58.1% were women. Of the participants, 65.4% reported a minimum knowledge regarding the Child and Adolescent Statute, 52.6% answered that the issue of child violence was addressed in the classroom, and 73.5% admitted they did not feel safe to act in a situation of maltreatment. Conclusion: There were deficient points in the specific program content with respect to child protection legislation, pointing out the need to revise the lesson plan and the teaching-learning strategy, as well as to promote a precise training of health professionals who work with students' guidance.
