ABO blood group discrepancies: Study of prevalence and related factors

Abstract: Background: ABO discrepancy is any deviation from the expected pattern of red cell antigen grouping with serum-grouping or when the forward-grouping results do not correlate with reverse-grouping results. This study was done to determine the incidence and causes of ABO discrepancies and to identify the correct blood group for safe blood transfusions. Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study. It was done on 9970 samples collected between June 2017and May 2018. All ABO typing records kept at the … Show more

“…Type II ABO discrepancy occurs because of an unpredicted reaction in cell grouping owing to diminished expression of the red cell antigens. 9 11 A weak subgroup of A is more common than a weak subgroup of B. Subgroups of A weaker than A2 contribute to almost 1% of ABO blood group discrepancy. 3 The subgroup of A can be broadly divided into two categories depending on the agglutination of red cells with anti-A.…”

“…Type I discrepancy characterizes by a diminished reaction in reverse grouping due to missing or weak antibodies. 9,11 Out of six cases, four donor samples had blood group discrepancy due to weak B antibodies, and the rest two samples had both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. The presence of weak B antibody is more common than the presence of anti-A antibody in type I ABO discrepancy.…”

“…16 Previous studies revealed that the most common responsible factor for ABO discrepancies was clerical errors including mixing-up of samples, identification and phlebotomy errors. 9,10 In present study we have omitted such cases. In our study, we found that frequent transfusions in cancer patients was a leading cause of ABO discrepancy followed by weakened expression of red cells antigens which were enhanced by lowering of temperature.…”
