Abnormalities in the serum phospholipids fatty acid profile in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis - a pilot study

Abstract: The fatty acid composition of serum phospholipids were analyzed in 20 patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis (11 with malnutrition and 9 with acceptable nutritional status); 25 healthy age and sex-matched adults were used as controls. Cirrhotic patients showed higher levels of palmitic acid and total saturated fatty acids than healthy subjects. Total n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and levels of linoleic, dihomo-gama linolenic, arachidonic, and docosahexaenoic acid were significantly lower (p<… Show more

“…We also showed the efficacy of increasing levels of not only EPA, but also DHA in plasma phospholipids by providing its precursor ALA (3.0 g) from seed mixture. That was inconsistent with reports that EPA can limitedly be converted to DHA [12, 38]. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that our patients have low intake of fish, once every two weeks, as poor eating patterns of people in our region [25].…”

“…Altered FA composition was reported in many pathologic and physiological states [30,31,32,33], including chronic inflammation [34]. However, FA profiles and the course of diseases can be affected by PUFA supplementation [35,36].…”

“…Although, the increased level of saturated FAs in CF was previously described [31,36], it should be stressed that a high amount of palmitic acid in PLs in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis may be also related to the cirrhotic process and independent of dietary intake, as was reported by Clemmesen et al [37]. Furthermore, an increase in activity of Δ-9 desaturase and a decrease in elongase function were described in liver cirrhosis [16]. These metabolic alterations may lead to an increase in palmitic acid in patients with liver cirrhosis.…”

“…It seems that these disorders may follow liver failure. Also, in patients with alcoholic liver disease, the low AA was detected [16,45]. Interestingly, the observed decrease in AA was explained by its increased metabolism to eicosanoids and the existence of inflammation.…”
