Abnormal glucose metabolism in virus associated sepsis

Abstract: Sepsis is identified as a potentially lethal organ impairment triggered by an inadequate host reaction to infection (Sepsis-3). Viral sepsis is a potentially deadly organ impairment state caused by the host’s inappropriate reaction to a viral infection. However, when a viral infection occurs, the metabolism of the infected cell undergoes a variety of changes that cause the host to respond to the infection. But, until now, little has been known about the challenges faced by cellular metabolic alterations that o… Show more

“…Metabolic reprogramming is a crucial process that fuels overactive immune cells [ 29 ]. In the case of severe viral infection and the so-called “cytokine storm”, a potentially life-threatening process, glycolysis plays a crucial role in the hyper-inflammatory response [ 30 ]. The ability to modulate the glycolysis process (to inhibit or stimulate its processing) could be useful for immune response control in various physiological states.…”

“…One of the most broadly tested glycolysis inhibitors is D-glucose analog 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG), lacking the -OH group in the C-2 position in the pyranose ring [ 30 ]. 2-DG competes with glucose to bind to transmembrane GLUTs and enter cells.…”
