Ability of three desensitizing agents in dentinal tubule obliteration and durability: An in vitro study

Abstract: Aim:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three desensitizing agents on dentinal tubule obliteration and their durability in use on the dentinal tubules.Materials and Methods:Sixty specimens were obtained from 30 extracted sound human maxillary first premolars. Each tooth was mesiodistally sectioned to obtain 30 buccal and 30 lingual surfaces, and enamel was removed in order to simulate hypersensitive dentin. Specimens were divided into four groups with 15 specimens each. Group 1 sampl… Show more

“…The conventional light cure is used in polymerization of the resin thus reducing the fluid flow. [ 13 14 ] In the review of literature, no study has been done to compare propolis and Admira protect in the treatment of DH. Hence, in this study, we evaluated clinical efficacy of propolis (Group A, test) and Admira (Group B, test), and a comparison was made with sterile water (Group C, placebo).…”

“…In an in vitro study, Admira Protect is considered a best durable agent when compared to other products. [ 14 ] This may be because, polymerization leads to precipitation of plasma proteins from dentinal tubules, thus reducing permeability and fluid flow. [ 13 ] Our result goes in accordance with the in vivo studies done by Torres et al .…”

“…The percentage of the blocked dentinal tubules was calculated by dividing the number of occluded tubules in a single micrograph with the total number of tubules present in that image, and then multiplying it with 100. Three independent blinded reviewers (who were not part of the study group) were requested to analyze the percentages of tubule occlusion, following the criteria given by Pathan et al [17]: No occlusion = 0%, mostly unoccluded (< 25% of tubules occluded), partially occluded (25 to < 50% of tubules occluded), mostly occluded (50 to < 100% of tubules occluded), and occluded (100% of tubules occluded). The reviewers performed the analysis three times and then submitted the mean of their analytical results.…”

“…Because of their buffering and apatite-forming abilities, BAG can be considered as great alternative for dentin hypersensitivity treatment [2,[11][12][13][14][15]. However, BAG, which covered dentinal tubule, appeared to be removed easily by chemical and physical stimuli [16]. The recently introduced mesoporous bioactive glass (MBN) is found to be more effective for dentinal tubule obliteration and durability.…”
