Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy and the durability of propolis and Light-cured ormocer-based desensitizer (Admira Protect, Voco: Cuxhaven Germany) in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Materials and Methods: The study was conducted over a period of 2 months on 13 patients with 72 hypersensitive teeth, randomly allocated into three treatment groups: Group A: Treated with Propolis, Group B: Admira protect (Voco: Cuxhaven Germany), and Group C: Sterile water (Placebo control). Baseline sensitivity was recorded by the operator using tactile and evaporative stimuli. Visual analog scale (VAS) was used to record the degree of sensitivity perceived by the patients. All the groups received applications of allotted materials on day 1, 7, 14, and 21. After each applications VAS scoring was recorded. On day 30 and 60, only pain evaluation was done to determine the durability of each test materials. Statistical Analysis: One-way ANOVA, repeated measure ANOVA and post hoc test was done for multiple comparison. Results: All the groups showed significant results in reducing DH. Among Groups A and B, Group B showed immediate postoperative result at the end of the 1 st week. Conclusion: Both the test materials were effective in reducing DH but Admira protect was found to be more efficient in reducing pain with longer duration of action (CTRI regd no: CTRI/2017/12/010755).

Dentin Tubule Occlusion Potential of Novel Dentifrices Having Fluoride Containing Bioactive Glass and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

Objective: To compare the in vitro potential of dentin tubule occlusion of two novel experimental dentifrices consisting of fluoride containing bioactive glass (BG) with zinc oxide nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight dentin discs (n = 48) were divided into 6 groups (n = 8), based on their brushing dentifrices: Group 1 = artificial saliva (AS; control); Group 2 = fluoride dentifrice (Colgate Palmolive^©, UK); Group 3 = experimental nonactive agent dentifrice; Group 4 = experimental dentifrice with 1.5% BG; Group 5 = experimental dentifrice with 4% BG; and Group 6 = BioMinF^© dentifrice. Postbrushing, the discs were subjected to acidic challenge with 6% wt citric acid (pH = 4.0) for 1 min. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy were performed pre- and post-citric acid challenges, and percentages of tubule occlusion assessed. Results: SEM micrographs of group 1 (AS) show no tubule occlusion (0%), whereas those of groups 2 and 3 show partial tubule occlusion (25 to <50% of tubules occluded). The SEM micrographs of dentifrices containing fluoride-BG (groups 4, 5, and 6) show that most of the tubules (>50 and <100%) were occluded. For all the groups (excluding group 1), pre- and post-citric acid challenge values are statistically significant (p < 0.05). EDX analysis reveals the presence of zinc in experimental dentifrices only. Conclusion: The results of novel experimental dentifrices are comparable to those of the BioMinF^©, in terms of tubule occlusion. Dentifrices containing BG could serve as an alternative in dentin sensitivity management.

Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Combined with Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot as a New Material for a New Treatment Option for Dentin Hypersensitivity

Dentin hypersensitivity is one of the most common clinical conditions usually associated with exposed dentinal tubules. The purpose of this study was to identify the potential of a graphene oxide quantum dot coating for mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles as a new material for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity by investigating its mineralization activity and dentinal tubules sealing. Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticle was fabricated by modified sol-gel synthesis. X-ray diffraction was performed to characterize the synthesized nanoparticle Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy investigated the functionalized surfaces. The distribution of the specific surface area and the pore size was measure by Pore size analysis. The morphology of sample was observed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Field Emission Transmission Electron Microscope (FETEM). After disk-shaped specimens of mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles and graphene oxide quantum dot coated mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (n = 3) were soaked in the simulated body fluid for 0, 1, 5, 10,and 30 days, the amount of ions released was observed to confirm the ionic elution for mineralization. Sensitive tooth model discs (n = 20) were applied with two samples and evaluated the dentinal tubule sealing ability. The spherical mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles and graphene oxide quantum dot coated mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles with a diameter of about 500 nm were identified through FESEM and FETEM. The ion release capacity of both samples appeared to be very similar. The amount of ion released and in vitro mineralization tests confirmed that graphene oxide quantum dot coating of mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles did not inhibit the release of calcium, silicon and phosphate ions, but rather that graphene oxide quantum dot promoted hydroxyapatite formation. In the FESEM image of the sensitive tooth disc surface, it was observed that graphene oxide quantum dot coated mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles sealed tightly the dentinal tubules. The graphene oxide quantum dot coating of mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles not only showed the excellent dentinal sealing ability but also rapidly promoted mineralization while minimizing the size increase by coating the mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles.
