Abduction: The Logic of Discovery of Grounded Theory

Abstract: This essay is a contribution to the question whether grounded theory methodology (in the variant of STRAUSS & CORBIN) contains an abductive research logic as developed in the work of Charles Sanders PEIRCE. After going through the works of STRAUSS and CORBIN I answer the question with a resounding yes. But it does not only contain the logic of abductive reasoning but also that of qualitative induction. "We decided to write a book about methods in the mid-1960s. We felt that changes were in the air and wanted t… Show more

“…Additional notes In line with the interpretivist philosophy, the resulting themes in the analysis were not predefined but rather emerged in a process of data collection and analysis in an abductive approach (e.g. Reichertz, 2009). Hence, the empirical emergence of themes is not to be confused as a true grounded theory approach (e.g.…”

“…Each of the authors has been engaged in collection and/or analysis of at least one of the datasets. The re-analysis has been done in pursuit of domestication-generated questions but also with inspiration from grounded theory in the form of abduction (Reichertz, 2007).…”
