Chemoprevention strategies, which aim to prevent or reduce the risk of cancer using natural products, align with the Maqasid Shariah by promoting the preservation of life and the protection of health, which are fundamental objectives of Islamic law. This review aimed to understand the role of natural products (plants source) as chemoprevention from Maqasid Shariah viewpoint. The study of natural products as chemoprevention and their conceptualization are in parallel with the Al-Qur’an and As-Sunnah were found through a thorough search of the literature. Chemoprevention is a type of intervention that, in accordance with the first principle of Maqasid Shariah which emphasis on the preservation of life (hifz al-nafs). Several types of natural products from plant resources mentioned in Al-Qur'an and Al-Hadith for instance, dates, figs, olive, fennel, acacia, cucumber, pomegranate, ginger, onion, and black cumin possessed medicinal properties for disease treatments and anti-cancer effects. While different cancer types respond differently to natural products as anticancer agents, this review has identified categories of plants with chemopreventive efficacy in parallel with the concept of Maqasid Shariah that can serve as a guide for additional in-depth research in the biomedical sciences field.Keywords: chemoprevention, Maqasid Shariah perspective, natural products, plants

Colorectal cancer )CRC( is one of the most common cancers worldwide, and one of the most common causes of cancer deaths. In recent times, significant advancements have been made in elucidating the molecular alterations of the disease, and the results have been an improved understanding of CRC biology, as well as the discovery of biomarkers of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic significance. In this review, an evaluation is carried out of the molecular pathology research of CRC emanating from Saudi Arabia. The verdict is that the data on the molecular alterations in CRC from Saudi patients is at best modest. This dearth of molecular pathology data is aptly reflected in the paucity of molecular markers recommended for testing by the Saudi National Cancer Centre guidelines for CRC management. Large scale multi-institutional and multiregional translational studies are required to generate molecular data that would inform diagnostic, prognostic, and risk-stratification guidelines for Saudi CRC patients.

Sapitinib Reverses Anticancer Drug Resistance in Colon Cancer Cells Overexpressing the ABCB1 Transporter

The efficacy of anti-cancer drugs in patients can be attenuated by the development of multi-drug resistance (MDR) due to ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters overexpression. In this in vitro study, we determined the reversal efficacy of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EFGR) inhibitor, saptinib, in SW620 and SW720/Ad300 colon cancer cells and HEK293/ABCB1 cells which overexpress the ABCB1 transporter. Sapitinib significantly increased the efficacy of paclitaxel and doxorubicin in ABCB1 overexpressing cells without altering the expression or the subcellular location of the ABCB1 transporter. Sapitinib significantly increased the accumulation of [ 3 H]-paclitaxel in SW620/AD300 cells probably by stimulating ATPase activity which could competitively inhibit the uptake of [ 3 H]-paclitaxel. Furthermore, sapitinib inhibited the growth of resistant multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTS). The docking study indicated that sapitinib interacted with the efflux site of ABCB1 transporter by π-π interaction and two hydrogen bonds. In conclusion, our study suggests that sapitinib surmounts MDR mediated by ABCB1 transporter in cancer cells.
