This work reports the synthesis of ordered and vertically aligned iron oxide nanowires for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. The nanowires exhibited promising PEC activity for water oxidation with saturated photocurrents of ~0.8 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE. Various factors inevitably affect their photochemical activity such as crystallinity, morphology, compositional gradient, and surface states. They were studied with HRTEM, EELS and Raman shift techniques. The nanowires had complex compositional and morphological structures at the nano and atomic scales. The nanowires annealed at 350 ⁰C had an outer shell dominated by Fe 3+ cations, while the core had mixed oxidation Page 2 of 44 ACS Paragon Plus Environment ACS Applied Energy Materials 3 states of iron cations (+2 and +3). In contrast, nanowires annealed at 450 ⁰C are fully oxidized with Fe 3+ cations only and were found to be more active. At the same time, we observed anisotropic compositional gradients of nickel cations inside of the iron oxide, originating from the nickel support film. Our work shows that the methodology used can affect the composition of the surface and near surface of the grown nanowires. It therefore points out the importance of a detailed analysis, in order to obtain a realistic structureactivity relationship in photo-electro-catalysis.

Cylindrical Magnetic Nanowires Applications

Cylindrical magnetic nanowires feature unique properties, which make them attractive for fundamental research as well as novel applications. These one-dimensional structures introduce a pronounced shape anisotropy that together with material selection can strongly affect the magnetic properties and can be tuned by incorporating segments of different materials or diameters along the length. They attract a large interest in the scientific community, ranging from physicists to material scientists to bioengineers. Consequently, these nanowires are developed for and employed in very diverse applications in medicine, biology, data and energy storage, catalysis or microwave electronics, among others. In this review we investigate the most active emerging applications of cylindrical nanowires grown in alumina templates by electrochemical deposition. This method has several key features, including low cost and a high level of control over the design. A fundamental property that distinguishes those applications is the operating frequency, which we chose to apply as an underlying structure for this review. With this we attempt to provide a wide and organized view of applications based on cylindrical magnetic nanowires with a focus on tailored physical and chemical properties.

Point-of-care (POC) applications have expanded hugely in recent years and is likely to continue, with an aim to deliver cheap, portable, and reliable devices to meet the demands of healthcare industry. POC devices are designed, prototyped, and assembled using numerous strategies but the key essential features that biosensing devices require are: (1) sensitivity, (2) selectivity, (3) specificity, (4) repeatability, and (5) good limit of detection. Overall the fabrication and commercialization of the nanohole array (NHA) setup to the outside world still remains a challenge. Here, we review the various methods of NHA fabrication, the design criteria, the geometrical features, the effects of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on sensing as well as current state-of-the-art of existing NHA sensors. This review also provides easy-to-understand examples of NHA-based POC biosensing applications, its current status, challenges, and future prospects.
