A zoological catalogue of hunted reptiles in the semiarid region of Brazil

Abstract: The variety of interactions between human cultures and herpetofauna is the subject matter of Ethnoherpetology, a subdivision of Ethnozoology. In the semi-arid region of Brazil, many reptiles interact with human communities because of their utility or because of the risks they represent. These interactions have obvious implications for the conservation of reptiles from this region. In this context, ethnoherpetology studies are crucial because they serve as subsidies for guiding strategies for the handling and co… Show more

“…Likewise, this situation was also reported in relation to other animals such as spiders [48] and bats [48,49]. It is noteworthy that regardless of gender, there is a great aversion to snakes, which is not surprising as the people’s negative perception in relation to these animals is common in the Northeast [16]. …”

“…Among the most relevant cultural features, religious beliefs and practices have long influenced the interaction between serpents and people [53,54], and in the Northeast semiarid region it is no different [16,52]. In this region, Catholicism is among the most widespread religions, and as well as other expressions of Christian faith, it has influenced the attitudes towards the local wildlife [55,56].…”

“…This suggests that with the greater mammalian population decline there is now more pressure on the other species of smaller size and on other vertebrate groups, which were once less exploited. The herpetofauna has representatives among the wild vertebrate of game importance in Caatinga, generally the lizards Salvator merianae and Iguana iguana (Alves et al 2012b), even though the number hunted is much smaller when compared to the bird-fauna and mammals-fauna game of the region. Such a situation is different to the one recorded in Amazonia, where reptile groups such as the Chelonians (turtles) have played an important role in the riverside dwellers' diet (Alves and Santana 2008; Alves et al 2012d).…”
