Abstract-Supervision systems play an important role in industry mainly due to the increasing demand for product quality and high efficiency, and to the growing integration of automatic control systems in technical processes. In fact, the supervision system has a great number of components and interconnections, and it is difficult to describe and understand its behavior. Furthermore, the supervision system in industrial plants, implemented in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software, must undertake, at least, the following three main tasks: monitoring, control and fault tolerance. So it can be classified as a complex system. The objective of this paper is to show interests of the use of functional analysis techniques such as SADT (Structured Analysis and Design Technique) and SA-RT (Structured Analysis Real Time) for the design of supervisory systems. This is why we present a general model of analysis and supervision of production systems. This model was based on the one hand on the functional analysis (FA) and on the other hand on the SCADA system.

The author gives an overview about the potential of utilizing remote engineering in engineering research, education and professional training, focusing on different kinds of technological characteristics. This paper presents a web-based remote process control engineering laboratory for engineering education using configuration software. A set of double holding water tanks apparatus, suitable for remote control experiments, was carefully designed for process control experimental teaching. A series of experiments from characteristics testing of one order process to predictive control of nonlinear system can be conducted on it. The laboratory system includes laboratory portal, web server and process control system with both programmable logic controller and control instruments as the controller. The webbased remote laboratory was developed efficiently by using the configuration software, which is used widely in industrial automatic control. Remote operations through internet by the engineering students in School of Modern Distance Education, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China have shown that the laboratory system is useful in helping the students understand the control theory through remote experiments.
