A web-based application to simulate alternatives for sustainable forest management: SIMANFOR

Abstract: Growth and yield models at different scales are useful tools for forest stakeholders. Adequate simulation of forest stand conditions after different silvicultural scenarios allows stakeholders to adopt appropriate actions to maintain forest integrity while forest products and services are obtained to benefit society as a whole. SIMANFOR is a platform to simulate sustainable forest management alternatives, integrating different modules to manage forest inventories, simulate and project stand conditions and main… Show more

“…Field data measurements were updated to year 2011 and 2016, which correspond to each ALS flight, to avoid any temporal lag between ALS-metrics and stand-level variables. The PHRAGON-2017 individual tree model was applied [55] through the forest simulator platform Simanfor [56]. This model enables tree-level distance-independent simulation of the development of Aleppo pine afforestations in Aragón.…”

“…Simulation tools are essential for sustainable forest management, since they allow foresters to explore different management and silvicultural alternatives. In this context, the SiManFor [30] online platform (www.simanfor.es) has been developed to facilitate simulation of sustainable forest management alternatives at the stand level. SiManFor provides utilities for assessing forest growth models and simulates silvicultural scenarios inherent to forest management.…”

“…These advantages have led to the development of a number of web-based applications in forest research. For instance, SIMANFOR is a web-based application that supports different forest growth models to promote sustainable forest management (Bravo et al, 2012), and Rammer et al (2014) developed a web-based toolbox to support forest management. Additionally, EucaTool is used in a web environment to estimate the growth of Eucalyptus globulus plantations (Rojo-Alboreca et al, 2015).…”
