The first reports of popular disturbances in connection with Decree 798, calling for obligatory civil registration of births and deaths in the Brazilian empire, surfaced in the early days of January 1852. In the ensuing weeks, men, women, and children from across the impoverished northeastern Brazilian backlands convened in small settlements and towns to protest the decree. Local authorities reported being forced to abandon their posts, fleeing from the “mass of ignorants,” who, armed with knives and stones, threatened violence against those who would implement the law. Disturbances were reported in at least thirty-one localities, with crowds estimated at one hundred to several thousand people.

Resumo:Este artigo analisa o banditismo rural como um fenômeno social de longa duração no país, compreendendo o pistoleirismo como parte integrante da cultura política e das relações de poder presentes no meio rural, comungando com a permanência de valores coloniais da valentia, da honra e das formas de vingança. O aporte teórico leva em consideração um complexo estudo a partir de seus principais arregimentadores: a sociologia e a história. Neste sentido, a busca pela compreensão do fenômeno social é uma tentativa em se compreender melhor o tema, pouco abordado pela historiografia brasileira. Palavras-chave: Banditismo, ruralismo, violência, historiografia. Abstract:This article analyzes the rural banditism as a long-lasting social phenomenon in the country, comprising the figure of the "hitman" as part of a political culture of the power relationships in the rural milieu, in line with the permanence of colonial values such as bravery, honor, and several forms of vengeance. The theoretical foundation takes into account a complex study stemming from those fields responsible for regimenting this issue, namely sociology and history. In this sense, the search for the understanding of this social phenomenon is an attempt to better apprehend this theme, which has not received too much attention from the Brazilian historiography scholars so far. Keywords: Banditism, ruralism, violence, historiography Hobsbawm: um marco diferenciadorHobsbawm influenciou não apenas a historiografia, mas a criminologia latino-americana a partir dos modelos de interpretação, tanto para formas de banditismo individual, como para grupos marginais. A história e outras áreas do conhecimento humano se mostraram bastante influenciadas pelas argumentações do autor, buscando concentrar suas análises nos comportamentos dos bandidos e dos marginais, inserindo-os no seu contexto social e histórico.Dentre estes trabalhos o personagem memorável e com maior recorte de pesquisas foi, sem dúvida, a figura de Lampião e seu bando. Em segundo lugar o bandido Antônio Silvino toma parte dos interesses acadêmicos. As façanhas de Lampião, o bandido no cangaço, foram buscadas pelos historiadores e sociólogos, interpretando a marginalidade como um fenômeno do *
