A Venous Catheter Complication: Venous Perforation and Lung Injury

Abstract: Central venous catheters are frequently used for different causes, like fluid infusions, haemodialysis, and measurement of central venous pressure. Complications that occur at the time or after the placement of these catheters can give harm to the patient or can cause need for a new attempt. Complications, like malfunction of the catheter, arterial puncture, haemothorax, or pneumothorax, can be seen in 5%-26% of the patients, and early detection is very important. We want to present a venous perforation and lu… Show more

“…Blood flows with 1-10 mm/s velocities are clearly distinguishable. The variation of particles concentration in the flow affects photodetector's signal intensity and consequently the perfusion as predicted in (2,3) and shown in Fig. 6b.…”

“…The risk of undesired blood vessel puncture exists in many medical procedures such as catheter installation for angiography and hemodialysis [1], commonly performed intravenous injections and cannulations [2], or even needle biopsy of intracranial tumor [3]. In needle intervention, rapture of the blood vessel may lead to serious complications the worst of which is the death of a patient.…”

“…CDT should be performed by skilled practitioners with an understanding of the venous structures. The incidence of vascular perforation has been stated around 1% (Miliani et al, 2017;Sahutoglu et al, 2014). Insertion of catheter by skilled clinician and the use of ultrasound decreases the prevalence of complications caused by variations.…”

“…Complication-free insertion of CVC for HD increases confidence of the patient on the professional’s competency even after switching from peritoneal dialysis17 on worst outcome. However, likelihood of vascular perforation18,19 by experience clinicians is a matter of great concern. Higher rate of damage to IJV than SCV in catheter placement procedure shows resemblance with a published data3,20 on same lines.…”
