A variational model for free-edge interlaminar stress analysis in general symmetric and thin-ply composite laminates

Abstract: A variational model is developed to exactly determine both stress and displacement fields at free edges of general symmetric composite laminate strips under thermomechanical loads. By partitioning the total stresses in a composite with free edges into unperturbed (without free edge) and perturbation stresses and using the minimum complementary energy principle, the optimal stress and displacement fields are derived that exactly satisfy equilibrium, compatibility, boundary and continuity conditions. “…Becker found closed-form solutions for free-edge effects in cross-ply laminates [72] and Becker and Kress [73] considered the stiffness reduction in laminate coupons due to the free-edge effect. More recent research is due to Mittelstedt and Becker [74], Dhanesh et al [75], and Hajikazemi and Paepegem [76]. We mention this research on flat laminates as an introductory analogy because we did not find a systematic study on free-edge effects of corrugated laminates.…”

“…Schnabel et al 21 presented an analysis method for the determination of displacement, strain, and stress fields in cylindrically curved cross-ply laminates under bending load, and their method was compared to the results of finite element simulations in good agreement. Hajikazemi and Van Paepegem 22 developed a variational model to determine stress and displacement fields at free edges of symmetric composite laminate strips under thermomechanical loads, and the method is also applicable to thin-ply laminates. “…The problem of out-of-plane stresses associated with the edge effect has been studied since the pioneering work of Pipes and Pagano in 1970 [25] and continues to the present day [10,17,26]. A review of the state of the art of this subject can be found in [27] and [28].…”
