A Valence Bond Description of Dizwitterionic Dithiolene Character in an Oxomolybdenum–Bis(dithione) Complex

Abstract: Metallo-dithiolene non-innocence is explored in an oxomolybdenum-bis(dithione) complex, [Mo4+O(i-Pr2Pipdt)2Cl][PF6] (where i-Pr2Pipdt is N,N’-piperazine-2,3-dithione), that possesses a piperazine ring as an integral part of the dithiolene ligand. The title complex displays unusual spectroscopic features for a formally reduced Mo(IV) dithiolene complex, namely a low energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer band with appreciable intensity and C-C and C-S stretching frequencies that are markedly different from thos… Show more

“…We have shown that these ring systems, in conjunction with the dithiolene, afford additional redox possibilities and these may play a role in the enzymes. 20,31,32 Interestingly, the Mo(IV)-dithione/Mo(VI)-dithiolene couple constitute a valence tautomeric system. Thus, the determination of Mo and dithiolene oxidation states from molybdoenzyme protein crystallography may not straightforward if the pyranopterin dithiolene chelate in the enzymes can exist in different oxidation states.…”

“…Dithiolenes display remarkable non-innocent behavior in small molecule analogues of pyranopterin Mo active sites (9)(10)(11). This non-innocence extends the redox cycling of the metal through its VI/V/IV oxidation states to include two electron redox reactions of the dithiolene ligand via access to the reduced ene-dithiolate, radical dithiolene, and oxidized dithione forms (12)(13)(14).…”
