A Universal Multifractal Approach to Assessment of Spatiotemporal Extreme Precipitation over the Loess Plateau of China

Abstract: Abstract. Extreme precipitation (EP) is a major external agent driving various natural hazards in the Loess Plateau (LP), China. Yet, the characteristics of spatiotemporal EP responsible for such hazardous situations remain poorly understood. We integrate universal multifractals with a segmentation algorithm to characterize a physically meaningful threshold for EP (EPT). Using daily data from 1961 to 2015, we investigate the spatiotemporal variation of EP over the LP. Our results indicate that EPTs range from … Show more

“…In summer, the southeastern part is influenced by the South Asian Monsoon and East Asian Monsoon due to the Pacific high pressure, which brings abundant warm and humid water vapour from the sea (Wang et al ., 2019). Because of the high‐pressure system of the Tibet Plateau, the humidity gradually decreases from the southeast to the northwest (Figure 12b) (Zhang et al ., 2020). The western part is controlled by the westerly system, and the water vapour is mainly transported by the prevailing westerly wind in mid‐latitudes (Chen et al ., 2010).…”

“…For example, Zhang et al . (2020) examined the variation of EPE from 1961 to 2015 and concluded the EPE in the Loess Plateau intensified. Wang et al .…”
