“…Later studies have explicitly modeled osteoclasts resorbing lacunae of several elements (van Oers et al 2008), or lacunae with an explicit shape and size of several elements (Liu et al 2008). Although it would be possible to use the latter models here, we believe it would not offer any advantages for the present research goals.…”

“…An alternative version of Huiskes' model had osteoclast activity inhibited by strain-induced osteocyte signals, and this was also central to our extended version of the model (van Oers et al 2008), where osteoclasts were explicitly modeled and guided by osteocyte signals. In this study we have chosen for random resorption, however, to ensure that any adaptation to mechanical loading is the result of osteocyte-osteoblast crosstalk.…”

“…Most important, this autologous product eliminates concerns about immunogenic reactions and disease transmission (42). Histomorphometry of cancellous bone is a useful tool to estimate changes in bone remodeling because approximately 25% of cancellous bone is resorbed and replaced every year in adults compared to only 3% reduction in cortical bone and this explains why in most of papers focused more on cancellous bone (43). The histomorphometric results in the present study revealed that defects grafted with ASCs-PRP showed a significantly higher result (p≤0.05), with a mean area % of spongy bone and compact bone of (64.96±5.37 and 837.62±24.95), compared to ASCs alone (47.65±1.43 and 661.92±12.65) and without grafting (33.55±1.74 and 290.85±7.27) respectively.…”

“…This choice was made to stay in agreement with the remodeling theory used in earlier numerical studies [15]. It should be noted, however, that it would be straightforward to also make osteoclast activity dependent on the mechanical signal, but in earlier studies this did not lead to large differences in the result [50]. Third, as in these earlier studies, we used strain energy density as the mechanical stimulus, whereas others have proposed other stimuli such as fluid flow and microdamage [11,51].…”
