A Unified Global Reference Frame of Vertical Crustal Movements by Satellite Laser Ranging

Abstract: Crustal movement is one of the main factors influencing the change of the Earth system, especially in its vertical direction, which affects people’s daily life through the frequent occurrence of earthquakes, geological disasters, and so on. In order to get a better study and application of the vertical crustal movement, as well as its changes, the foundation and prerequisite areto devise and establish its reference frame; especially, a unified global reference frame is required. Since SLR (satellite laser rang… Show more

“…Cartographic models of the vertical movements of the Earth's crust are used in economics, Earth sciences, and reference systems. Data for cartographic models are acquired through the use of direct (geodetic measurements) and indirect (geological, geophysical, geomorphological, and hydrological data) techniques [1][2][3][4][5]. Geodetic datasets differ in their sources, measurement methods, spatial and temporal resolutions, levels of reference, data processing methods, and data trends.…”

“…Vertical movements of the Earth's crust are widely studied along the European coast, which provides a reference for comparing the obtained results. The movements of the Earth's crust are significantly related to the maintenance and updating of coordinate systems, human activity, monitoring of flood hazards and changes in the mean sea level [1][2][3][4][5][6]. These movements are manifested by the horizontal and vertical displacement of tectonic plates [7].…”

“…[5,6]. Nowadays, this system can determine the orbits of the LEO satellites at a precision level of 1-2 cm, and has been applied in the establishment of ITRF2005, ITRF2008, and ITRF2014 [7][8][9][10][11][12]. Gambis [5] analyzed the short-term PM series calculated by DORIS and found that differences in PM solved by DORIS and that by IERS C04 were 1.13 mas and 0.69 mas, in the X and Y directions, respectively.…”
