A unified flight phase and event model for the analysis of heterogeneous ATM simulations

Abstract: The research activities of the DLR Institute of Flight Guidance include validation and verification of new systems and procedures, such as airport infrastructure, routes, or assistance systems for air traffic controllers and pilots. Research is supported by a number of different simulation environments. Real-time simulators (RTS) like the Apron and Tower Simulator or the Air Traffic Management and Operations Simulator, as well as several fast-time simulation (FTS) tools focus on different parts of air traffic … Show more

“…A sufficient state model for what-if applications could not be retrieved. Although multiple state models for flight description do exist (e.g., [8,9]), none have been adapted for comparable operations with the other models or had sufficient documentation for the comparison. As such, the state model was left for future work.…”

“…To postprocess the output from the simulation, which consists of several files containing information on aircraft movements, mission details, use of resources, and so forth, an in-house-developed program, Extensible Workflow Management for Simulation (EWMS), is used. Its special feature is that the user can postprocess data from various sources and tools, which after being imported to the generic internal format, are assessed with the same algorithms and presented to the user in common reports (19). For emissions calculations EWMS uses the ICAO engine data bank, Issue 16, 05.02.2009.…”

“…During the preparation of the study we picked a set of frameworks, like Google Chart Tool 1 , JFreeChart 2 , VisIt 3 , GeoTools 4 , NASA World Wind 5 or ArcGIS 6 , that seemed to be convenient and investigated their features. As it turned out JFreeChart and NASA World Wind are the toolkits with the best documented java interfaces and opportunities for uncertainty imaging as well.…”

“…To be able to evaluate the simulations, we developed a method to calculate and visualize the uncertainty in trajectory prediction. The concept is implemented as a tool into DLR's evaluation environment "Extensible Workflow Management for Simulations" (EWMS) [6] and validated using simulation scenarios. The software system described in this paper is an extension to the reporting suite EWMS.…”
