A two‐year follow‐up of oral antioxidant supplementation in primary open‐angle glaucoma: an open‐label, randomized, controlled trial

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: To evaluate the effect of oral antioxidant supplementation (OAS) on primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) over a 2-year follow-up period. Patients and methods:In this open-label, randomized controlled trial, 117 eyes of 117 patients with mild or moderate POAG and intraocular pressure under control with topical antiglaucoma medications were recruited and randomly divided into three groups according to supplementation: (1) OAS with (ICAPS R â -Alcon Laboratories, n = 26); (2) OAS without x-3 fatty… Show more

“…As such, we excluded 21 potentially relevant trials with a follow-up ranging from two hours to three years. Five of these studies reported results for visual outcomes at follow-up times of two years or greater (Araie 2010; Drance 1998; Garcia-Medina 2015; Koseki 1999; Sawada 1996). …”

“…The fifth excluded study with visual outcomes at follow-up times of two years or greater was Garcia-Medina 2015. Participants with primary open angle glaucoma were randomly assigned to one of three groups: oral antioxidant supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids; oral antioxidant supplementation without omega-3 fatty acids; and control.…”

“…Even if glaucoma is a multifactorial disease [7,10], systemic oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathophysiology of POAG and PEG. Despite growing research on antioxidant therapy to prevent glaucoma, in both in vitro [64] and in vivo studies with animals [65] and humans [66], antioxidative supplementation has shown contradictory [66,67,68]. However, there were promising results of supplementation in endothelial function [69], some specific clinical conditions [70] and overall mortality [71].…”
