A two-stage stochastic MILP model for generation and transmission expansion planning with high shares of renewables

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the generation and transmission expansion planning of large-scale energy systems with high penetration of renewable energy sources. Since expansion plans are usually provided for a long-term planning horizon, the system conditions are generally uncertain at the time the expansion plans are decided. In this work, we focus on the uncertainty of thermal power plants production costs, because of the important role they play in the generation and transmission expansion planning by affec… Show more

“…In this paper, it is out of scope to present a rigorous introduction to the Benders decomposition technique; as such, we limit ourselves to highlighting how the decomposition is carried out and how an iterative process is derived which converges to the solution of the original stochastic problem. An example of this approach can be found in [21].…”

“…Equations ( 9)-( 13) describe the general formulation of an LSTM block [33,44]. In Equations ( 9), (10) and Energies 2021, 14, 8035 5 of 21 (12), the amount of outputs for input (i t ), forget (f t ), and output (o t ) gates are calculated, respectively. In addition, Equation (11) shows the cell state, and S t is the output of LSTM block.…”

“…The authors of [10] have analyzed the GEP and the transmission expansion planning (TEP) of a large-scale network with renewable energy. The objective function is to minimize investment, maintenance, and fuel costs using a multi-cut Benders decomposition algorithm for the optimization.…”

“…sequence of possible realizations of the uncertain parameters over the horizon) (Mavromatidis et al , 2018a). To address this latter issue, stochastic programming techniques are oftentimes implemented in the literature where the design problem is formulated in a two-stage fashion over a reduced set of scenario (Birge and Louveaux, 2011; Micheli et al , 2020; Pazouki and Haghifam, 2016). In this way, the operation (i.e.…”
