Abstract:ResumoAo transitar para o trabalho livre, o Brasil não conheceu a retração econômica que marcou várias sociedades americanas que o haviam feito antes. No artigo apresenta-se a hipótese de que isso se deveu também à lentidão da transição, a qual habilitou firmas e trabalhadores a construírem reputações que reduziram os custos de transação e viabilizaram a continuidade da produção, mas sem escravos.Palavras-chave: Escravidão.
