A transcriptional regulator that boosts grain yields and shortens the growth duration of rice

Abstract: Complex biological processes such as plant growth and development are often under the control of transcription factors that regulate the expression of large sets of genes and activate subordinate transcription factors in a cascade-like fashion. Here, by screening candidate photosynthesis-related transcription factors in rice, we identified a DREB (Dehydration Responsive Element Binding) family member, OsDREB1C, in which expression is induced by both light and low nitrogen status. We show that OsDREB1C drives f… Show more

“…As AP2/ERF transcription factors, OsDREB1C and NGR5 increased rice nitrogen use efficiency. OsDREB1C can simultaneously improve the photosynthetic efficiency and nitrogen use efficiency of rice, leading to early heading, high yield and early maturity, thereby increasing rice yield [ 47 ]. Over-expression of OsDREB1C enhances the ability of nitrogen uptake and transport, which allocates more nitrogen to grains, thereby increasing the nitrogen utilization efficiency by at least 25%.…”

“…It has been identified in rice that an OsDREB1C can drive a transcription program with diverse functions, determining photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen utilization, and flowering time. The yield of rice overexpressing OsDREB1C has increased by 41.3%~68.3% [ 53 ]. In this study, we preliminarily explored the relative expression levels of 13 representative PdAP2/ERF genes in four tissues of ‘Wanfeng’ almond and six freezing stress temperature treatments in annual dormant branches based on qRT–PCR technology.…”

“…ERF TFs, the last step of the ethylene signaling pathway, regulate the response of plants to environmental changes (Xie et al, 2019). Recently, one intronless ERF TF was reported to simultaneously modulate photosynthesis and nitrogen utilization in rice (Wei et al, 2022). ERF TFs showed remarkable changes to low CO 2 stress in all five Flaveria species (Supplemental Note 15).…”
