A tissue‐equivalent phantom series for mammography dosimetry

Abstract: A breast tissue‐equivalent series (BRTES) of phantoms is manufactured to mimic both the attenuation and the density of the range of glandular and adipose tissue compositions encountered in mammography. The BRTES simulates breast tissues across the range of 20% to 70% glandularity and can be assembled in a variety of thicknesses to represent a compressed breast thickness corresponding to glandularity to simulate various patient demographics. The fabrication techniques are presented, and the physical properties … Show more

“…12 Figure 8 illustrates the radiological image of an FOC dosimeter relative to a 4 cm thick 50% glandularity breast phantom. 13,14 The image demonstrates that while the dosimeter is unobtrusive on the image, it could potentially obscure important diagnostic information on a mammogram. Caution should, therefore, be exercised prior to placing the dosimeter on a patient for true in vivo measurements.…”

“…The ACR mammography phantom is 4.2 cm thick and consists of 3.5 cm Lucite and a 0.7 cm thick paraffin insert, which contains the image quality indicators (2) . The NORMI PAS phantom (PTW‐Freiburg GmbH, Freiburg, Germany) is used for image quality assurance on digital mammography units.…”

“…Tissue-equivalent materials are necessary for a vast number of purposes regarding radiation interaction (Argo et al 2004;Boone et al 2000). Equipment calibrations, quality control, the design of therapeutic or diagnostic rooms, are some of the tasks that require these materials.…”

“…Another complication factor is the diverse composition of breast tissue among women, since the adipose to glandular tissue proportion (breast glandularity) and the breast density vary greatly (Ng and Lau 2015). This culminates in the necessity of different bTEM materials for each glandularity (Argo et al 2004).…”
