A three‐dimensional modeling study of trace species in the Arctic lower stratosphere during winter 1989–1990

Abstract: A three‐dimensional (3D) radiative‐dynamical‐chemical model has been developed and used to study the evolution of trace gases in the Arctic lower stratosphere during winter 1989–1990. A series of 10‐day model integrations were performed throughout this period. The model includes a comprehensive scheme of gas phase chemical reactions as well as a parameterization of heterogeneous reactions occurring on polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) surfaces. An important element of a 3D chemical model is the transport scheme.… Show more

“…To evaluate the effect of chlorofluorocarbon emission reductions on polar O 3 it is the change in the chemical regime under concurrent climate change which is most interesting. By employing a seasonal proxy for chemically undisturbed polar O 3 , the amount of chemical O 3 depletion can be calculated [Chipperfield et al, 1993;Manney et al, 1995;Goutail et al, 1999]. While such a proxy is routinely used in chemistry transport simulations of the past decade, it is not yet available for the majority of CCMs.…”

“…While the RPA can be used for studying photochemical processes in I-D and 2-D models, it is too computer-time-consuming to be used in the 24-layer ACTM. Accordingly, we have formulated an optimized photochemical algorithm (OPA) to significantly reduce the computer time required for the photochemical calculations but The diagnostic thermodynamic scheme for predicting PSC events has been incorporated following Hanson and Maursberger [1988] and Miiller and Crutzen [1993] and is virtually the same as that adopted in a 3-D model by Chipperfield et al [1993]. This Butchart and Austin[1996].…”
