A three-dimensional lead(II) coordination polymer: poly[aqua-μ-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylato-lead(II)]

Abstract: In the title coordination polymer, [Pb(C5H2N2O4)(H2O)](n), the Pb(II) atom is seven-coordinated by one N atom and five O atoms from four individual imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate (HIDC2-) groups and one water molecule. It is interesting to note that the HIDC2- group serves as a bridging ligand to link the Pb(II) atoms into a three-dimensional microporous open-framework.

“…[1][2][3][4] Lead, in addition to being incorporated into coordination polymers, [5][6][7][8] is found in many different materials, including batteries, [9] nonlinear optical materials, [10] ferroelectric materials, [11] and semi-conductors. [12] Lead can be found with a coordination number ranging from 2 to 12 (depending on the binding lig-A C H T U N G T R E N N U N G ands) and with valences of + 2 and + 4, [13] providing many opportunities for tuning the structure and properties of lead-based materials.…”

“…2 ]) has been previously synthesised and structurally characterised; [26,27] it has a stereochemically-inactive lone pair (holodirectional), enabling full coordination about the lead centre. The crystal structure is orthorhombic and possesses a Pb coordination number of nine, with eight Pb À N bonds between 2.667(4) and 2.915(7) and one weak PbÀN bond of 3.099 (8) . A mirror plane exists at the lead centre (C s point group).…”

“…We have been able to prepare a two-dimensional hybrid compound I, of the formula Pb 2 (1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate) 2 and a three-dimensional coordination polymer II, of the formula Pb(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate). The structure of the compound II is somewhat comparable to that of [Pb(C 5 H 2 N 2 O 4 )(H 2 O)] n reported by Zhang et al [23]. The structure of I is novel in that it is one of the few hybrid compounds formed by 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid [24].…”

“…Details of coordination chemistry of lead (II) compounds are frequently discussed in regard to the coordination and stereochemistry of the inert lone pair. Molecular complexes of lead with H 3 Idc have been reported earlier [22] besides a three-dimensional coordination polymer [23]. We have been able to prepare a two-dimensional hybrid compound I, of the formula Pb 2 (1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate) 2 and a three-dimensional coordination polymer II, of the formula Pb(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate).…”
